Create a pulse variant

A pulse variant allows you to add questions for a subset of the audience in addition to the main pulse questions. You can use variants to collect different feedback from specific groups without creating a separate pulse.

Admins and survey managers can create and manage pulse variants.

A pulse variant is useful when different groups of employees need to answer additional or different questions as part of the same pulse.

Example: You can create one variant for a team that needs to answer an additional driver question and another variant for a different team that needs to answer a different driver question.

A variant is based on an existing pulse and allows you to customize settings for a specific audience. The audience for a variant can overlap with the main pulse or other variants. The main pulse and its variants remain connected, allowing you to view their results as part of the same overall reporting structure.

Create a variant

Navigate to Apps → Butterfly EI → Pulse.

  1. Open the specific pulse you want to create a variant for.
    The page shows the current configuration summary of the pulse.
  2. Scroll down to the Variants section.
  3. Click + Add Variant on the right.
  4. Select the teams or sub-teams and click Next step. For more information to define the audience, refer to Create a pulse.
  5. Disable Use same frequency as Main Pulse and customize the frequency for the variant, and then click Next step. By default, this option is enabled, so the variant follows the parent pulse's existing cadence.
  6. Select drivers and questions, then click Next step. By default, the driver already used by the main pulse appears pre-marked. For more information to define the audience, refer to Create a pulse.
  7. Configure driver order and sub-drivers to govern the sequence in which the selected drivers and their sub-drivers are presented in the survey experience for this variant. Then click Next step.
  8. Enter a title for the pulse. The title is visible only to you.
  9. (Optional) Enter a description. The description is only visible to your team members.
  10. Click Create to launch the pulse variant.

📒Notes:

  • Each variant includes the main pulse's drivers and questions by default, which you cannot remove. You can also add new drivers and questions to the variant along with the existing ones.
  • You cannot modify the "Enable Driver Comments" and "Enable General Comments" settings for a variant. The variant uses the configuration set for the main pulse.

After creating a variant

After creating a variant, it appears under the main pulse's “Variants” section. Results for each variant are tracked separately but rolled up into the main pulse's overall reporting, allowing you to view combined or individual results.
