Gamification concepts: Activities, badges, levels, and points
Overview
Engagedly’s gamification framework includes activities, badges, levels, and points, which work together to reward contributions. Understanding these concepts helps you design fair, motivating, and aligned reward structures.
Activities
Activities are predefined actions that automatically earn points. Examples include completing a course, receiving recognition, or contributing to collaborative tasks. HR teams use activities to set up activity rules. Employees earn rewards for completing these actions. Activities encourage meaningful participation and connect rewards to real behaviors.
Badges
Badges make recognition visible, memorable, and aligned with your culture and values. Engagedly supports activity (system) badges that automatically award employees when they complete predefined actions. These badges reinforce consistent behaviors and encourage ongoing participation. Learn more in Set up activity badges.
If your organization prefers more flexible recognition options, use company (custom) badges. Managers or HR award these badges manually to recognize noteworthy achievements. Learn more in Create company badges.
Legacy badges enhance and automate work anniversary celebrations. Instead of recognizing only the 1-year milestone, the system recognizes multiple milestones (such as 3, 5, or 10 years). When an employee reaches a milestone, the system automatically awards points and a badge and sends a custom certificate via email. Learn more in Create legacy badges.
Levels
Levels represent progress in recognition systems. As employees demonstrate consistent behaviors, they progress to higher levels and earn higher point values. Levels reinforce continuous engagement rather than one-time achievements.
Points
Points represent the value of recognition. Employees earn points through badges or automated activities, then redeem them for rewards. They add value to achievements and create a clear connection between effort and reward.
How these concepts work together
Activities, badges, points, and levels work together to create a continuous and motivating experience in Engagedly. When employees complete meaningful actions, the system identifies the activity and awards the appropriate badge. Each badge adds points to the employee’s profile, and these points build over time. As employees accumulate points, they progress through levels that reflect their ongoing contributions and unlock greater benefits.
In simple terms
Activities trigger badges → Badges award points → Points accumulate → Levels unlock higher value.
Employee completes a gamified activity > Earns a badge and points > Points accumulate > Unlocks higher levels > Climbs the leaderboard.
This sequence encourages consistent participation, reinforces positive behaviors, and supports long-term engagement across the organization.
